Trip Overview

A blend of adventure and mysticism make for the unique allure of Ladakh, also known as India’s Little Tibet, which is among the world’s highest inhabited plateaus. Situated at more than 3,000 metres above sea level, it lies more than 600 kilometres north of New Delhi in the Jammu and Kashmir state. Also popular as Moonland for its outlandish landscape of vast barren mountains, the bluest of skies and beautiful lakes that change colour during the day.

LADAKH, the land of jagged peaks and barren landscape is at once alluring and awe-inspiring. Hidden behind this harsh and forbidding facade is an ancient civilization and a captivating people. With its unaltered character and overwhelming natural beauty Ladakh beckons the more intense and adventurous of travelers. The awesome wilderness and magic can only belong to this great land of towering mountains and Buddhist simplicity. With the great Indus flowing right through Ladakh, the province is divided into Leh, the capital Nubra, Zanskar, lower Ladakh and Rupshu.

The many distinctive features of Ladakh are its uplands, craggy, barren cliffs and plateaus. Governed by a climate that provides about 50 mm of rainfall each year, Ladakh is cold and dry. A visitor, therefore, will be faced with a long and bitter winter of frozen landscape but yet very beautiful, and a short, hot summer when the precious glaciers melt. The Ladakhi festival, which is organized on a large scale is a regular tourist event, which is held in Leh every year. It showcases the traditional dances, sporting skills and handicrafts with a lot of pomp and fan fare, and should not be missed. Ladakh offers excellent opportunities for adventure tourism.

You can go river rafting in the highest location for the sport in the world along the 26-kilometers stretch from Phey to Nimo along the mighty Indus River. Ladakh’s high altitude and mountains make it an ideal spot for paragliding, mountaineering, trekking and even skiing. Besides the astoundingly beautiful landscapes and the alluring wide open cold deserts, the other most fascinating feature of Ladakh.

Day No: 1
ARRIVE LEH: Arrive at Leh airport and get transferred to your hotel. NOTE - Only postpaid mobile networks work in Ladakh (Airtel and BSNL mainly). Post landing at Leh and some rest. The best way to avoid AMS is to acclimatize. As you arrive to Leh by air, keep a day free to simply acclimatize. Proper rest must be taken each day. Enough sleep, good food and no exertion will help your body get used to the heights, and low oxygen. Tips for Better Acclimatization: • Increase the altitude gradually • Keep your body properly hydrated • Avoid sleep during the day • Avoid over exertion • Avoid tobacco and smoking and alcohol and other depressant drugs • Keep your body warm

Day No: 2
LEH - LOCAL AND AROUND: Early morning drive to watch the turquoise waters of the Indus meet the muddy waters of Zanskar at the Sangam. Discover the impression on the boulder at the revered Gurdwara Patthar Sahib. Coming back towards Leh, you stop at the 11th century Spituk Gompa overlooking the mighty Indus. End this fascinating day with an inspirational visit to the Hall of Fame constructed in memory of Indian soldiers who have lost their lives in Indo-Pak wars. Later visit Shanti stupa and Leh market.

Day No: 3
LEH - NUBRA VALLEY VIA KHARDUNG LA 18,390 FT.(120 KMS / 4-5 HRS): Post breakfast we drive to Nubra Valley. The road journey from Leh to Nubra Valley passes over Khardung La (The Highest Motorable Road In The World) at 5,602 Mtrs / 18,390 Ft, around 39 kms from Leh. From the pass, one can see all the way south over the Indus valley to seemingly endless peaks and ridges of the Zanskar range, and north to the giants of the Saser massif. Nubra Valley is popularly known as Ldumra or the valley of flowers. It is situated in the north of Ladakh between the Karakoram and Ladakh ranges of the Himalayas. The average altitude of the valley is 10,000 Ft. above sea level. Upon arrival in Nubra we check in at our Hotel in Hunder for Overnight stay.

Day No: 4
NUBRA VALLEY - TURTUK - NUBRA VALLEY: With a long day of travelling ahead, begin with a hearty breakfast before heading on the 80-odd kilometres deeper into the Shyok valley. Stunning views of the river running parallel along the roadside with towering mountains ahead and rare patches of green fields make superb photographs. India's last major settlement, Turtuk, is predominantly Muslim-dominated but does have a couple of gompas overlooking the Shyok as well. Listen close as locals here speak the interesting Balti language that uses old Tibetan sounds no longer used in modern Tibetan. Stop for an authentic local lunch at this little hamlet and spend some time here before the journey back to Hunder.

Day No: 5
NUBRA TO PANGONG LAKE (180 KMS / 5-6 HRS - ONE WAY): After an early breakfast we leave for Pangong Lake via Shyok. This is a less treaded off-beat route and connects Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake without need of coming back to Leh through same old route. This offers some unique views of flash-flood plains. Reach Pangong lake by late afternoon and enjoy the stunning beauty of Pangong Lake.

Day No: 6
PANGONG LAKE TO LEH (140 KMS / 6-7 HRS): Morning at leisure to explore the beauty of lake and later we drive back to Leh enroute visiting Shey and Thiksey Monasteries on the way. In the evening you can stroll around the market place for some last minute souvenir shopping.
