In a nutshell

In habited by the Monpa people one finds the Tawang town in the Tawang district of the north western part of Arunachal Pradesh. The place gets its name from its famous Monastary the Tawang Monastary whose name means “the chosen Horse”. The Tawang is the largest monastery after the monastery of Lhasa. It was founded by Mera Lama Lodre Gyatso as per the wishes of the 5th Dalai Lama. The place is even famous for the other tourist places like Urgelling Monastery, Banggajang Lake, Geshila Peak, Gorichen Peak, Nuranang Water Fall, Sela Peak, Thingbu Hot Spring and Tsachu Hot Spring.

How to Reach:

To enter Tawang special Inner line permits from the government are required. These are only available from Kolkata (665 Km), Guwahati (159 Km from Tawang), Tezpur (636 Km), and New Delhi (1439 Km).

Air:  Tezpur has the closest airport to Tawang which is well connected by air to Kolkata.

Road: One can easily travel to Tawang by road from Guwahati and Tezpur.
