The gorgeous city of Dehradun gets its name from the combination of the two words Dehra and Doon meaning camp and valley in the midst of the Shivaliks, respectively. The place has great importance as it houses the National Institute for Visually Handicapped. The place is enriched with Tourist spots like the Tapkeshwar temple, Malsi Deer Park, Kalanga monument, Laxman Siddh, Chandrabani, Guchhupani,the Robber’s cave and many more.

Doon has been well loved by people like Stephen Alter, Nayantara Sahgal, Allan Sealy, and Ruskin Bond as they either spent a considerable period of their lives in Dehradun or wrote during their stay. Doon even had a special place in the life of the first Prime Minister-Jawaharlal Nehru who visited the place quiet frequently and even spent the last few days of his life over here before his death in Delhi.

How to Reach

AirDehradun’s prime airport is Jolly Grant Airport which is 239 Km from Delhi. Flights to this airport are available from many cities. 

RailDehradun Railway Station is well connected to Delhi (239 Km), Mumbai (1681 km ), Kolkata (1341 km), Lucknow (573.0 km) and Varanasi (739 km).

RoadA good connection through roads can be found to Dehradun.

Clock Tower

Tapkeshwar Temple

It is placed in the banks of a rivulet in Dehradun which is the holy abode of Lord Shiva. 


This is located on the banks of the sacred Ganges. It is a popular belief tells us that this is the place, where Dronachrya had undergone his penance.


Situated in the suburbs of the city, this is a beautiful spot where one can enjoy a calm and soothing environment.

Malsi Deer Park

Situated in the near vicinity of the city,it is a mini zoological park.

Assan Barrage

This is 40 km away from the town which attracts large number of migratory birds and is an 'ornithologist's paradise'.

Bhadraj Temple

This temple is located 15 km from the town and is dedicated to Lord Balbhadra. 

Jwalaji Temple

Located in Benog Hill, 9 km from the town, this gives a fine view of the Himalayan peaks. 

Shivanand Ashram

A spiritual centre was established by Swami Shivanand.


Located at a distance of 130 km from Dehradun district, this is famous for offering panoramic views of the snow covered mountains
